A tapered width ring protects your Gold.  Rings with a uniform width will rotate around the finger, exposing the entire outer surface of the ring to the palm-side of the hand where most damage occurs.  Everything you lift or carry in your hand comes in direct contact with your ring, and if your ring rotates around your finger, the whole outer surface of the ring will be exposed to increased wear and scratching.  Our natural gold nuggets average 22k-near pure gold.  This purity makes them handsome to look at, but it also means they can be damaged if exposed to excessive friction or impact.
A tapered band shows more gold nuggets, and is more comfortable to wear.  A ring that is 10mm wide at the back of the shank can cause discomfort if you make a tight fist, while a 5mm wide shank will be comfortable to wear and will not limit your range of motion.  A 10mm front width creates ample space to showcase the natural gold nuggets, and the tapered back insures that the nuggets will stay comfortably on the top of your hand where they belong.  Why pay more to have nuggets all the way around when they are just going to get beat up?
